Nowadays promising digital detecting systems of the Medipix family are available and make possible real time imaging with high sensitivity and broad dynamic range. The hybrid silicon pixel detector device Medipix consists of a sensor chip with 256 x 256 square pixels of 55 µm size each and a read-out chip containing an amplifier, two discriminators and a 13-bit counter for each pixel.
Following the USB1 based read-out interface for Medipix detectors we have developed a new and improved version. This new interface is controlled by a digital signal processor (DSP) providing high level of flexibility and high performance for online data processing (up to 8000 mips.). The interface is equipped with a 128 MB of DDR2 memory which can save about 1000 frames from Medipix. All signals between Medipix and DSP go through the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) giving the possibility to implement new functionality easily by reprogramming the FPGA without need to change the hardware. Communication with PC is possible via USB2.0 interface (transfer rate of 480 Mb/s) or 1 Gbps Ethernet. RUIN is also equipped with 8 DACs (Digital to Analog Converter), 8 ADCs (Analog toDigital converter), two general purpose connectors (20 pins and 40 pins), and two JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) connectors for DSP and FPGA.
To be more flexible we decided to use a modular system. The interface thus consists of three parts: Main board with logic (processor, FPGA, memory, USB etc.) and most of the connectors, power board with all power sources and power connector, and changeable Medipix chipboard adapter.
RUIN is compatible with all versions of Medipix chips (Medipix2, Medipix MXR, Medipix Quad, Timepix) and is prepared for future chips (Medipix3). It supports both serial and parallel read-out at highest frequencies supported by the chip itself.
